Counselling for Shame

Finding hope after childhood trauma

I'm Laura and I work with adult survivors of childhood abuse and trauma

Emotional, physical and sexual abuse in childhood shapes your adult life and presents real challenges to building trusting relationships. The long terms effects of childhood abuse can include:

  • Depression and anxiety

  • Feelings of shame and guilt

  • Low self-esteem and self-hatred

  • Problems with sleeping

  • Being in abusive relationships as an adult

  • Lack of trust

  • Sexuality and Intimacy problems

  • Dissociation

  • Flashbacks and nightmares

Do you experience any of the following to cope?

  • Alcohol or drug addiction - you use substances to escape the fear and helplessness

  • Eating disorders - you use food as a way to have control over your body

  • Self harm - you hurt yourself to relieve anxiety or due to feelings of self hatred

  • Relationship problems - you impulsively enter and leave relationships

  • Suicidal behaviours - you have planned to or attempted to take your own life

Maybe it's time to:

  • build your self esteem so that you can trust yourself in making decisions

  • release feelings of shame and become comfortable with who you are

  • understand your trauma responses and what you can do when they happen

When we struggle with the effects of childhood abuse, it affects our perception of ourselves, leading to problems around judgement and shame. Counselling can help you to work through your experiences and help you to change how you experience your world. Read more

I found her easy to talk to and her non-judgemental approach to listening, understanding and offering practical advice helped me to feel more optimistic and therefore happier.
